Since qualifying in Youth & Community Work in 1995, I've worked for a variety of statutory and voluntary organisations in England and Wales. From establishing, developing and managing youth centres, drop-in services, community cafes, street-based work and mobile youth projects to assisting, empowering, engaging, inspiring, instructing, motivating and supporting young people, I've always tried to stick to my strong, social education principles: helping people to gain for themselves, the necessary knowledge, feelings and skills, in order to meet their own developmental needs and those of others. Through my circus and theatre work, I've affected life changing experiences on a significant number of young people. Although they may not perform well at more traditional subjects, many of them excel in Youth Arts. Instead of failing, they quickly discover that they're able to do it and become empowered by their own success. Not only do the young people perform better but they have a desire to perform better. Young people have 'found' themselves, identified how they can be successful and recognised for such, which has then had a positive impact on their attitude, behaviour and academic success. Helping young people to find that desire and to develop the necessary skills, knowledge and experience to further their creative potential, has always been paramount in my work.
